Saint Lucia is a mountainous island in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles, stretching 27 miles long and 14 miles wide.
Its most distinctive features are the Gros Piton and Petit Piton volcanic plugs near the town of Soufrière.
The island is divided into 11 districts, including the capital Castries and Gros Islet, which hosts popular resorts and Rodney Bay. Marigot Bay on the west coast was historically a naval shelter for French and British fleets. The island uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar and receives international flights through Hewanorra International Airport in the south.
The Pitons
Gros Piton (771 m) and Petit Piton (743 m) are steep volcanic plugs near Soufrière, often used as Saint Lucia’s visual symbol.
Marigot Bay
A narrow, sheltered harbour south of Castries, historically used by French and British fleets as a 'hurricane hole.'
Hewanorra Airport
Saint Lucia’s main international gateway located in the south, serving most long-haul flights to the island.
